Day 10 - Salzburg

Today we head for Salzburg and say goodbye to our fourth hotel. The journey is longer than envisaged and we arrive around midday. Ulie is our fifth guide, and our best in my opinion, perhaps because she talks about Mozart. The weather is abysmal. We are British and get on with it, umbrellas in hand. Apparently Salzburg has also had lots of dreadful weather this year. The city (much smaller and prettier than Vienna), is Mozart through and through, including Mozart balls (chocolate). Our coach driver doesn't like them but I find them excellent. We are shown Mozart's birthplace and later we find his residence. I picture him running about the city, with a tatty wig and being late everywhere. The statue of him in the Mozartplatz is grand and dignified. Well, perhaps he deserves it after after all those gems he wrote, but I'm sure his wife would not recognise it.

The visit to Salzburg is only rescued by a decent tour guide, a good lunch, iced coffee and chocolate. We are only passing through but at least I have seen it and walked the very streets that the great composer did. Worth the visit but definitely also worth a return one.

We are heading for our fifth hotel, before the two day trek home tomorrow and another hotel in Brussels. As we cross over the border into Germany, everyone's phone alarms with a warning of an unexploded WW2 bomb in the vicinity. How exciting!

We certainly feel we have been on a Grand Tour but sometimes I find myself asking, 'which city was that in?' My photos should help later once I can get through them! Hotel rooms are now being rated on the ability to swing a cat and the efficiency of the flush.

The next two days will be border crossings and watching movies provided by the coach, which I will not bore you with. Here's hoping nothing exciting happens here on.

If you have read this far, well done and thank you!

  2. Thanks for sharing Mike. Your appetite for verbose guides and noisy travelling companions is similar to mine. We are cut from the same cloth! Must admit, long coach journeys don't appeal but you saw so many places that I would like to see too.
